    Mass Matrices in E6 Unification

    We study a supersymmetric E6 grand unified model in which the SU(5) 5^* components are twisted in the third generation 27. Supplementing the adjoint Higgs field to a model analyzed previously, we calculate the mass matrices for the up and down quarks and charged leptons. Although the number of free parameters is less than that of observables, an overall fitting to the observed masses and mixing angles is shown to be possible. Most notably, we find two novel, parameter-independent relations between the lepton 2-3 mixing angle and the quark masses and CKM mixing angles that are in good agreement with the large lepton mixing recently observed.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, typos correcte

    Real-Space Imaging of Alternate Localization and Extension of Quasi Two-Dimensional Electronic States at Graphite Surfaces in Magnetic Fields

    We measured the local density of states (LDOS) of a quasi two-dimensional (2D) electron system near point defects on a surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Differential tunnel conductance images taken at very low temperatures and in high magnetic fields show a clear contrast between localized and extended spatial distributions of the LDOS at the valley and peak energies of the Landau level spectrum, respectively. The localized electronic state has a single circular distribution around the defects with a radius comparable to the magnetic length. The localized LDOS is in good agreement with a spatial distribution of a calculated wave function for a single electron in 2D in a Coulomb potential in magnetic fields.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Hybrid ECAL: Optimization and Related Developments

    Hybrid ECAL is a cost-conscious option of electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) for particle flow calorimetry to be used in a detector of International Linear Collider (ILC). It is a combination of silicon-tungsten ECAL, which realizes high granularity and robust measurement of electromagnetic shower, and scintillator-tungsten ECAL, which gives affordable cost with similar performance to silicon.     Environmentally robust ASR front-end for deep neural network acoustic models

    This paper examines the individual and combined impacts of various front-end approaches on the performance of deep neural network (DNN) based speech recognition systems in distant talking situations, where acoustic environmental distortion degrades the recognition performance. Training of a DNN-based acoustic model consists of generation of state alignments followed by learning the network parameters. This paper first shows that the network parameters are more sensitive to the speech quality than the alignments and thus this stage requires improvement. Then, various front-end robustness approaches to addressing this problem are categorised based on functionality. The degree to which each class of approaches impacts the performance of DNN-based acoustic models is examined experimentally. Based on the results, a front-end processing pipeline is proposed for efficiently combining different classes of approaches. Using this front-end, the combined effects of different classes of approaches are further evaluated in a single distant microphone-based meeting transcription task with both speaker independent (SI) and speaker adaptive training (SAT) set-ups. By combining multiple speech enhancement results, multiple types of features, and feature transformation, the front-end shows relative performance gains of 7.24% and 9.83% in the SI and SAT scenarios, respectively, over competitive DNN-based systems using log mel-filter bank features.This is the final version of the article.     Magnetoelasticity theory of incompressible quantum Hall liquids

    A simple and physically transparent magnetoelasticity theory is proposed to describe linear dynamics of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states. The theory manifestly satisfies the Kohn theorem and the ff-sum rule, and predicts a gaped intra-Landau level collective mode with a roton minimum. In the limit of vanishing bare mass mm the correct form of the static structure factor, s(q)∼q4s(q)\sim q^4, is recovered. We establish a connection of the present approach to the fermionic Chern-Simons theory, and discuss further extensions and applications.     Evolution of the human fear-circuitry and acute sociogenic pseudoneurological symptoms: The Neolithic balanced-polymorphism hypothesis

    In light of the increasing threat of large-scale massacres such as terrorism against non-combatants (civilians), more attention is warranted not only to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also to acute sociogenic pseudoneurological ("conversion") symptoms, especially epidemic sociogenic symptoms. We posit that conversion disorders are etiologically related to specific evolutionary pressures (inescapable threats to life) in the late stage of the human environment of evolutionary adaptedness (EEA). Bracha et al. have recently argued that from the neuroevolutionary perspective, medically unexplained efferent vasovagal syncope and medically unexplained craniofacial musculoskeletal pain in young otherwise healthy individuals, may be taxonomized as stress and fear-circuitry disorders. In the present article, we extend neuroevolutionary perspectives to acute pseudoneurological sociogenic ("conversive") symptoms: psychogenic non-epileptic attacks ("pseudoseizures"), epidemic sociogenic disorders (DSM-IV-TR Epidemic "Hysteria"), conversive motor deficits (pseudo-paralysis and pseudo-cerebellar symptoms), and psychogenic blindness. We hypothesize that these perplexing pseudoneurological stress-triggered symptoms, which constitute psychopathology in extant humans, are traceable to allele-variant polymorphisms which spread during the Neolithic EEA. During Neolithic warfare, conversive symptoms may have increased the survival odds for some non-combatants by visually (i.e., "non-verbally") signaling to predatory conspecifics that one does not present a danger. This is consistent with the age and sex pattern of conversive disorders. Testable and falsifiable predictions are presented; e.g., at the genome-transcriptome interface, one of the major oligogenic loci involved in conversive spectrum disorders may carry a developmentally sensitive allele in a stable polymorphism (balanced polymorphism) in which the gene expression mechanism is gradually suppressed by pleiotropic androgens especially dehydroxyepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S). Taxonomic implications for the much-needed rapprochement between the forthcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) are discussed
